ISG Vertical Pipeline Centrifugal Pump shaft run-out check requirement

Shaft run-out on an ISG vertical pipeline centrifugal pump is one of the most overlooked but critical root causes of premature seal failure, rising vibration, and repeated bearing damage that many maintenance teams trace back to poor alignment or loose foundations. Even a tiny, unmeasured deviation from true concentricity can create cyclic stress that wears out precision components months or years ahead of their expected service life, even when the unit passes all basic startup checks.

Before taking any measurement, complete a series of pre-inspection setup steps to eliminate errors that can skew readings and lead to incorrect conclusions. Fully lock out and tag out all electrical power to the driving motor, and confirm no external piping strain or uneven flange loading is pulling on the pump casing, as this can twist the stationary shaft and create a false run-out reading that does not reflect the rotor’s true condition. Mount a stable magnetic base for the dial indicator on a rigid, non-moving part of the pump casing or bearing housing, never on the piping or a portable work stand that can shift slightly during measurement, to ensure the reference point stays perfectly fixed for the entire procedure. Zero the dial indicator against a known flat reference surface, then position the indicator’s plunger perpendicular to the shaft’s machined outer surface, applying just enough preload to keep the plunger seated firmly against the shaft without excessive side pressure.

Next, perform the core total indicator reading measurement across all critical shaft sections that directly impact pump reliability. Rotate the shaft slowly and smoothly by hand through one full 360-degree turn, making sure no binding or unexpected friction at any point in the rotation creates a jerky movement that distorts the indicator reading. Take readings at key locations including the shaft seal mounting journal, the impeller mounting area, the outboard bearing journal, and the exposed shaft section near the coupling, to capture deviations across the full length of the rotor rather than checking only one single point. Mark the high point of the run-out with a soft marker on the shaft surface, so you can cross-reference the position of maximum deviation against impeller keyways, coupling mounting faces, and other assembled components to identify if the issue comes from shaft deformation or misaligned installed parts.

Once you have the raw measurement values, interpret the results against field-proven performance limits to decide the correct course of action. For general service units operating at standard motor speeds, the maximum allowable total run-out across any measured shaft section should not exceed 0.05 millimeters, and this value tightens further for high-speed or high-pressure process applications where even small deviations can trigger severe vibration. If readings exceed the acceptable limit, first remove the coupling, impeller, and any other mounted components from the shaft, then recheck run-out on the bare shaft alone, to separate assembly-related misalignment from permanent shaft bending that requires corrective straightening or replacement. Document every measured value, the location it was taken at, and the shaft angular position of the maximum deviation, so you can compare results against future inspection data to track if shaft deformation is worsening over operating time.

After completing the full check, reassemble all removed components following correct torque and alignment procedures, then perform a quick post-assembly spot check to confirm no new run-out was introduced during reinstallation. This structured, field-validated procedure eliminates the guesswork from shaft condition assessment, catches early rotor damage before it escalates into catastrophic failure, and supports consistent long-term reliability across the pump’s full servic
